Sri Lanka’s coastline stretches over 1,300 kilometres, and thanks to the island’s two monsoon systems, there’s a good beach somewhere on it almost year-round. The trick is knowing which coast suits which season β and which stretch of sand actually matches what you’re looking for, since “beach” covers everything from backpacker surf towns to quiet stretches with barely another visitor in sight.
South Coast: the classic choice
Mirissa is the most famous name on the south coast, and for good reason β a curved bay backed by palm trees, good surf breaks, and one of the best places in the world to see blue whales, with boat tours running from November to April. A short drive away, Unawatuna offers calmer, more sheltered water that’s better for swimming with kids, plus easy access to Galle‘s historic fort for a change of pace.
Further along, Tangalle is the south coast’s quieter alternative β longer, wilder beaches with fewer crowds, and a good base for exploring nearby lagoons and turtle-nesting sites without the built-up feel of Mirissa.
East Coast: the dry-season swap
When the south-west gets its rains (roughly May to September), the east coast comes into its own. Trincomalee has calm, clear water and is a good base for diving and snorkelling, while nearby Nilaveli is quieter and better for simply relaxing on the sand. Further south, Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s best-known surf destination, with a string of world-class breaks and a laid-back backpacker energy.
Which coast, when?
As a rule of thumb: south and west coast beaches (Mirissa, Unawatuna, Tangalle) are best from December to March, when the weather is driest and calmest. East coast beaches (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) flip the calendar β May to September is their dry season, and the best time to visit.
