The train journey between Kandy and Ella gets called one of the most beautiful train rides in the world often enough that it’s become a clichΓ© β but having actually ridden it, the reputation holds up. Tea plantations climbing impossibly steep hillsides, waterfalls, pine forests and mist-covered valleys, all from a window seat on a train that hasn’t changed much in decades. Here’s how to actually do it well.
Which direction, and how far
Most travellers ride the full stretch from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (via Nanu Oya station) or continue on to Ella β roughly 6 to 7 hours covering the whole route, or you can break it into shorter legs. The single most scenic section is generally agreed to be between Nanu Oya and Ella, so if you’re short on time, prioritise that stretch over the earlier, flatter part of the line out of Kandy.
Booking seats
This is the part that catches people out. First and second class seats on the scenic services sell out weeks in advance, especially in peak season (December to March), and can only be booked through Sri Lanka Railways’ own system or in person at the station. Third class is unreserved and always has space, but means standing or sitting on the floor near the doors if the train is busy β which, for this particular route, is also where a lot of people end up taking their photos. What to expect on board
Vendors walk the aisles selling snacks and drinks throughout the journey, the doors are usually left open (sitting in the doorway is a rite of passage, but hold on and use common sense), and the train stops at small stations along the way where you can stretch your legs. Bring a light layer β it gets noticeably cooler as the train climbs into the hills, even though you started the day in the heat.
What’s at each end
Kandy is Sri Lanka’s cultural heart, home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and a good base for a day or two before heading into the hills. Ella itself is a small hill town with some of the country’s best short hikes β Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock both reward you with sweeping valley views for a few hours’ walk β plus the Nine Arches Bridge, one of the most photographed spots on the island.
