Negombo sits fifteen minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport, which is the main reason most visitors see it at all β but it’s a genuine fishing town in its own right, not just a place to sleep off a late flight.
The fish market
The Lellama fish market, right on the beach, runs from early morning and is one of the most direct ways to see how much of coastal Sri Lanka still makes its living from the sea. Go before 7am for the real working market rather than the quieter cleanup that follows.
The lagoon and the canals
Negombo’s lagoon and the Dutch-built canal system running through town are best seen by boat β a slow way to spot herons and egrets, and to see the traditional outrigger fishing canoes (oruwa) still in daily use.
St. Mary’s Church and the old town
Negombo has a strong Catholic heritage dating to Portuguese rule, visible in the number of churches for a town its size β St. Mary’s, with its painted ceiling, is the most striking. The old town streets around it are worth an unhurried walk.
The beach itself
Negombo’s beach isn’t the island’s best, but it’s long, easy to reach, and works well for the sole purpose most visitors need it for: an easy last night, or a low-effort start before heading further afield the next morning.
Getting there
Negombo is essentially at the airport’s doorstep β 15β20 minutes by road β making it the default first or last stop on almost any Sri Lanka itinerary.
